How the Block Blast Solver Works
The solver tries every ordering of your three pieces, then searches placements for each one — scoring every legal spot and carrying forward only the strongest 40 candidates once that many exist. The result is chosen by three priorities: placing all three pieces first, then clearing the most lines, then the highest board-quality score.
The search only knows the three pieces you’ve entered — future pieces are random and unknown, so the solver doesn’t claim to predict them. What it optimizes for is leaving the best possible board for whatever arrives next, not guessing what that will be.
Screenshot mode reads the board, not the pieces. The crop starts as a centered square you drag and resize, live-highlighting the cells it currently reads as filled so misalignment is visible before you commit. Occupancy comes from finding the most common color inside the crop — treated as the empty background — and flagging anything that differs as filled, which works across board themes and colors rather than assuming one fixed look. Pieces still come from the shape picker in both modes.
Worked Example
Input: a board with 41 of 64 cells filled and one open corner, given a 3×3 square, a 2-cell line, and an L-shape.
The 3×3 square only fits in the open corner — every other position on this board overlaps an occupied cell. Placing the L-shape there first would fill part of that corner and strand the 3×3 with nowhere legal to go, so the solver places the 3×3 first. That clears one full row and leaves a narrow strip open along the edge, which is exactly where the 2-cell line and the L-shape both fit without conflict.
Output: 3×3 square → corner (clears 1 row) → 2-cell line → edge strip → L-shape → adjacent edge cells (clears 1 additional column). Result: 2 lines cleared, no isolated holes left, and the center kept clear for the next set of pieces.
