What Is Block Blast?
Block Blast is a drag-and-place block puzzle played on an 8×8 grid — no falling pieces, no rotation, just placement and line-clears. Hungry Studio publishes the original mobile version for Android and iOS. The browser version above runs the same ruleset: three random block shapes sit in the tray under the board, and each one drags into an open space to complete a full row or column.
The App Store and Play Store both list other apps under the “Block Blast” name, built by separate developers around the same core mechanic. The 8×8-grid, three-piece, no-rotation ruleset is the one Hungry Studio publishes and popularized.
The board rewards planning over speed. A piece placed carelessly in turn one can block the exact space a later piece needs, so the difference between a 500-point run and a 50,000-point run comes down to reading three shapes ahead, not reacting faster.

How to Play: Core Mechanics
Every turn hands you three block shapes, and placing all three is what triggers the next set — there’s no discard, no skip, no undo.
An 8×8 grid, empty at the start of every new game — 64 cells to fill and clear.
Three randomly-shaped blocks per turn, from a single square up to a full 3×3, plus tetrominoes and pentominoes in between.
Each piece places exactly as shown — turning the screen or device never rotates it. Plan around the shape you get.
Fill a full row or column to clear it. Multiple lines at once score extra, and back-to-back clears build a Combo ×N streak.
The run ends the moment none of the three current pieces fits anywhere on the board — see no moves left for the exact trigger — then the board resets.
Desktop play uses a mouse drag from the tray to the grid; touchscreens use the same drag gesture with a finger, so the board behaves the same way whether the browser window is open on a phone or a desktop.
Hungry Studio’s mobile app added custom board skins in a recent update — instead of the default color set, the grid can render an uploaded image across its cells. The mechanic underneath is unchanged (still an 8×8 grid, still three pieces, still no rotation); only the visual skin differs — full breakdown on recent updates.
Game Modes: Classic vs. Adventure
Block Blast runs in two modes. Classic Mode has no finish line — play continues until the board fills, and the only goal is beating a personal best before that happens. It’s the mode running in the game above.
Adventure Mode, available on the mobile app, replaces the open-ended score chase with numbered levels and specific objectives — clearing a set number of gems, hitting a color target, or finishing inside a limited move count. Levels get harder as the objectives stack, and hard levels covers the ones that trip up most players.
Tips & Strategy for a High Score
Most runs end the same way: the board looks fine right up until a 3×3 piece has nowhere left to land. Three deliberate habits push a score well past the point where casual play usually stalls.
Work the corners before the center. A single square trapped in a corner needs an exact 1×1 piece, and those don’t appear often enough to rely on. Filling corners early avoids that trap; the center tolerates being filled later since more shapes can reach it.
Chase multi-line clears, then keep the streak going. A deliberate gap filled by a long straight piece or an L-shape clears two or three lines in one move, which scores more than clearing those same lines separately — and clearing on back-to-back turns builds the on-screen Combo streak for extra points.
Reserve a 3×3 opening. The largest block in the shape set is a solid 3×3 square. A board with no open 3×3 area turns that piece into an instant game-over, so keep one corner or edge clear enough to absorb it before the board gets dense.
