Why Boards Get Harder Late in a Run
Difficulty climbs the longer a run continues, and it’s not random — it’s a direct consequence of how the board fills. Early on, an empty cell is interchangeable with any other empty cell, since there’s room everywhere for almost any shape. As the board fills, that stops being true: what matters isn’t how many cells are open, but whether enough of them connect into a single region large enough for the pieces still coming.
A board with twenty empty cells in one open block is genuinely safer than a board with twenty empty cells split into five disconnected pockets, even though both look equally “open” at a glance.
Reading a Board’s Real Flexibility
The practical version of this: instead of estimating how much empty space a board has, look for the largest single connected region of it. A board can have plenty of open cells overall and still have no region big enough for a 3×3 piece if those cells are broken up by filled ones running through the middle of them.
A quick way to check: trace the biggest rectangle or block of touching empty cells with your eye. If that region alone isn’t big enough for the largest piece currently in the tray, the board is more fragile than the total empty-cell count suggests — regardless of how much open space is visible elsewhere.
A Concrete Example

If those 30 cells are spread as five separate pockets of roughly six cells each, none of them can take a piece bigger than a small L-shape, and a 3×3 square has nowhere legal to land anywhere on the board. The same 30 open cells arranged as one connected block would happily fit that same 3×3 square with room left over.
The raw count never changed; only the shape of the space did — and the shape is what the game’s placement check actually cares about.
This is why two boards with identical empty-cell counts can be one piece away from very different outcomes. A board reader who only tracks “how much space is left” is tracking the less important number.
The Same Board Isn’t Equally Dangerous for Every Draw
A board’s fragility isn’t a fixed property of the board alone — it depends on what the next three pieces happen to be. A board with three or four medium-sized disconnected pockets is perfectly safe against a draw of three small pieces, and dangerous against a draw that includes one large one. This is part of why a board that felt fine on one round can suddenly feel impossible on the next: the board didn’t get harder on its own, the draw changed what it was being tested against.
Reading a tight board well means checking it against the specific three pieces currently in hand, not against pieces in general — a region too small for a 3×3 square is still perfectly fine if no 3×3 square is anywhere in the current set.
Recovering When a Board Gets Tight
The instinct when a board feels tight is to keep placing and expanding outward, but that’s backwards. The more reliable order is to clear a line first, then use the space that clear opens up before adding anything new. Expanding into a tight board before clearing tends to fragment the remaining space further, which is exactly the pattern that turns a merely tight board into a genuinely stuck one.
When to Use the Solver
When a board is tight enough that a wrong read costs the run, checking beats guessing. Check it with the solver — it evaluates the actual connected space on the current board rather than estimating it by eye, which matters most exactly when a board looks borderline.
